X stores what looks like a GIF as a silent MP4 video, which is why a “GIF” downloaded elsewhere often arrives as an unusable frame. Here it comes back as a proper MP4 that plays and loops anywhere. Ordinary videos with sound resolve the same way — you do not need to know which kind you are looking at.
Quality is whatever the post carries
X re-encodes on upload and publishes several renditions, usually up to 1280×720. You see the ones that actually exist and pick from them, rather than being promised an HD file that quietly returns a smaller one. No downloader can produce a resolution the post never contained.
Public posts only
A protected account’s posts are restricted at X’s end and cannot be retrieved by any external tool. The quick test: open the link in a private browser window — if it plays without logging in, it will save here. We never ask for your X login and never store the links you paste.
